Uncover the science of crime in our Criminology program, where you'll explore the causes, nature, and control of criminal behavior. With a multidisciplinary approach, you'll study crime as a social phenomenon and take courses in related departments. Gain insights from sociology, psychology, and law, and develop the analytical skills to make a positive impact on people and society affected by crime.

Degree Requirements

Students majoring in Criminology will earn the degree of BA, Sociology.

In addition to successfully completing the liberal learning curriculum, the criminology major requires successful completion of the following major and elective courses with no more than two grades below C-:

  • MATH 125;
  • CRIM 208 and SOCL 205;
  • CRIM 390W and SOCL 340, 470W and 490W; all completed at Christopher Newport University in this department and passed with a grade of C- or higher;
  • CRIM 491;
  • Select an additional 4 CRIM courses (12 credit hours) at the 300-400 level;
  • Select an additional 1 ANTH, CRIM, GEOG or SOCL course (3 credit hours) at the 300-400 level;
  • In total, at least 18 credit hours in courses for the major must be earned at Christopher Newport University.

The minor in criminology requires successful completion of the following:

  • CRIM 208
  • Select one:
    • ANTH 203
    • GEOG 210
    • SOCL 201
    • SOCL 205
    • SOWK 201
  • Additional 4 CRIM courses (12 credit hours) at the 300-400 level.
