Discover the Power of GIS

Nearly every major challenge facing society has a geographic dimension. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) help us uncover patterns, understand connections, and make better decisions by showing us not only what is happening, but also where and why. From environmental protection and public health to business, transportation, public safety, and urban planning, GIS transforms geographic data into maps, analysis, and actionable insights.

The Baccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides foundational and applied training in geographic information systems, geospatial data management, spatial analysis, cartographic visualization, and GIS programming.

Through 16 to 17 credit hours of hands-on coursework, including a required internship, students learn to use GIS to investigate real-world problems, communicate complex information through maps, and support data-driven decision-making. The program prepares students to apply geospatial technologies in public agencies, private businesses, and nonprofit organizations—or to pursue further study in GIS and related fields.

Because GIS is used across a wide range of fields, the GIS certificate can complement nearly any area of study or professional background. It may be especially valuable for individuals studying or working in environmental studies, environmental science, biology, sociology, criminology, public health, government, urban planning, history, business, data analytics, data science, or computer science.

CNU’s GIS certificate is open to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students.

GIS is a versatile and highly sought-after skill used across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Completing the certificate will help you:

  • Build practical experience with GIS, spatial analysis, digital mapping, geospatial data, and programming.
  • Learn to investigate real-world problems and develop evidence-based solutions.
  • Strengthen your critical-thinking, analytical, communication, collaboration, and project-management skills.
  • Complete an internship that connects classroom learning with professional experience.
  • Develop maps, analyses, and other work that you can discuss with employers and graduate programs.
  • Prepare for careers and graduate study in fields that increasingly rely on geospatial data and technology.

The Baccalaureate Certificate in GIS appears on your academic transcript, providing employers and graduate admissions committees with formal recognition of your geospatial training and accomplishments.

The certificate is designed so that it can be completed in one academic year.

Students should begin with GEOG 250 (Introduction to GIS), which provides the foundation for the certificate’s upper-level courses. GEOG 349 (Mapping and Geovisualization) does not require any prerequisites and may also be taken at the beginning of the program.

The courses are generally offered according to the following schedule:

Fall Spring
GEOG 250 GEOG 350
GEOG 349 GEOG 450
GEOG 491 GEOG 491
BIOL 435/435L

Students are encouraged to apply and begin planning their courses as early as possible.
