Christopher Newport University is a public institution of higher education and agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
University counsel is appointed by the attorney general of Virginia, in consultation with the Board of Visitors and the president of the University.
University counsel provides counsel and representation to Christopher Newport University in all legal matters, advising the Board of Visitors, the president, executive officers and administrators, faculty, and staff in their official capacities.
University counsel provides a full range of legal services to the University, coordinates and oversees necessary resources of the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia and outside counsel, and serves as a member of the president’s senior leadership team.
University counsel is responsible to the attorney general of Virginia, the Board of Visitors and the president of the University and is employed for the sole and exclusive representation of Christopher Newport University.
Legal counsel and representation is available only on legal matters impacting university operations and interests. University counsel is not available to provide legal advice or representation to faculty, staff or students except with regard to activities or transactions of the University.
