Chairman Bill Ermatinger called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone in attendance. Executive Vice President, Mr. Bill Brauer, reported on the following:
Capital Projects Summary
Mr. Brauer provided an update on the Capital Projects summary and reported that construction on the Fine Arts Center has begun and is going well. The cost of steel and other costs continue to increase and we are working on bringing the project back into budget. The visitor lot has been relocated to the first half of the parking area in front of the library. The back half of the parking lot is being used for faculty/staff parking. A new parking lot is under construction along Warwick Boulevard, but progress has been impeded by rain. The widening of Prince Drew is three months behind, partially due to the weather. Concrete pavers have been put on the road between Luter and the Freeman Center and it looks very nice. The turf field is in the process of being demolished. This is the only field that has an east/west orientation on campus and it will be re-oriented to have the north/south orientation of the other fields. The new turf field will have new bleachers, a new scoreboard and press box. This is being funded by a separate capital campaign.
Capital Development Over the Years
Mr. Brauer provided an overview of the Capital Development of Christopher Newport University beginning 1937 to present. He explained the various phases of development that Christopher Newport University has undergone from farm land to the beautiful campus it is today. He also explained and differentiated the surrounding properties that are owned by Christopher Newport University and the properties owned by the Real Estate Foundation. In addition, the Real Estate Foundation owns several mixed use real estate properties, such as the shopping center, which may later be used for something else. He reported that there are six private properties remaining to be purchased adjacent to the main campus.
There being no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 11:12 a.m.
