Rector Bobby Hatten welcomed everyone present and called the Executive Committee meeting to order. Rector Hatten told the Board that the General Assembly is providing substantially more funding next year for Christopher Newport – more than $3.2 million in operating dollars and savings and nearly $1.0 million in additional need-based financial aid and he expressed his appreciation to the General Assembly for this additional funding. He told the Board that the Captains Commitment adopted in November will continue to guarantee tuition and fees for four years and now the first year will cost less and incoming in-state freshmen will save more than $1,300 over the next four years. Due to the generous support of the General Assembly and the Governor he asked the Board to consider the President’s recommendation to freeze tuition next year for all students, in-state and out-of-state. Rector Hatten then reviewed with the Board Resolution 1: Captains Commitment: Guaranteed Tuition and Fees. He then called for a motion to approve Resolution 1. Sheriff Morgan provided the motion, which was seconded by Mr. Millar.

President Trible also expressed his appreciation to the General Assembly for the increased funding and savings to Christopher Newport. He said the net increase in monies now available for FY20 exceeds by nearly $150,000 the dollars that would have been available under our approved tuition plan for next year.President Trible also applauded the General Assembly for the almost one million dollars in additional financial aid. He told the Board that other institutions will likely freeze tuition for Virginia students but raise tuition for out-of-state students. However, it is recommended that CNU freeze tuition for in-state and out-of-state students. He also noted that tuition has increased every year for the last 18 years and the Captains Commitment offers rock solid certainty about the cost of tuition and fees for four years.

After further discussion, Rector Hatten called for approval of Resolution 1, and it was passed by unanimous vote of the Board.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
