Scholarships
Christopher Newport offers several scholarships to students in the teacher preparation program (based on funding availability).
Blechman MAT Annual Scholarship $1,000-$4,000
Blechman scholars will teach in a critical shortage area in Newport News after graduation.
Makibbin Endowed Scholarship $1,600
Preference given to students who plan to teach English or elementary
Wood-Shoemaker MAT Annual Scholarship $4,000
Must demonstrate financial need
William E. Wood Scholarship $4,000
Awarded every other year to a rising senior accepted into the MAT program
James and Virginia Taylor Endowed Scholarship $600
Awarded to any MAT candidate
RCD Thompson Teaching Scholarship $2,500
Awarded to an MAT candidate with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who also has demonstrated financial need
Roos Endowed Merit Scholarship
Awarded based on demonstrated financial need
In addition, the Virginia Department of Education awards the Virginia Teaching Scholarships to minority or under-represented candidates, or to students who will teach in critical shortage areas.
