Master of Science in Applied Physics and Computer Science
The multidisciplinary MS in applied physics and computer science features three concentrations:
- Applied physics
- Computer science
- Computer systems engineering and instrumentation
Research areas include nuclear physics, astrophysics, robotics, sensor networking, artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems. The program’s flexibility enables students to prepare either for PhD programs or work in industry.
Five-Year Bachelor's to Master's Program
The five-year program is for current Christopher Newport juniors. Interested students are automatically accepted into the MS in applied physics and computer science program upon fulfillment of the undergraduate program criteria.
Students normally take three graduate courses during senior year and one in the summer after graduation. In the fifth year you take three more courses and complete a thesis.
Application to the program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 by the junior year.

Current Christopher Newport seniors and those who already hold a bachelor’s degree can apply to the traditional program. With 30 graduate hours, you can earn a master of applied physics and computer science while doing original research in the field.
Traditional program non-thesis option
Students who have an undergraduate degree, or will have by the time they enter, may take a course-intensive option.
