Biography

Education

  • MA in Mathematics, University of Michigan
  • BA in Mathematics, University of California, Berkeley

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Dr. Kennedy completed his bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley in 1997, and then his doctorate at the University of Michigan in 2004. He worked for two years at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania before coming to Christopher Newport University in 2006. He has served as the chair of the Math Department from 2013 through 2020. In 2022, he was appointed as Associate Dean of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences and continues to serve in that role. As of Fall 2026, he also serves as the SERC Makerspace Manager.

Teaching

My main teaching interests are in cryptography, error correcting codes, and abstract algebra. Regardless, I am happy to teach anywhere across the math curriculum.

Research

My research interests lie in infinite dimensional non-associative algebra, specifically Lie algebras of deep matrix and C* algebras.
