Training Programs
We offer two training opportunities in counseling services:
- Practicum in clinical or counseling psychology
- Professional counselor internship
Both programs build and advance clinical skills and professional development, apply theoretical material to clinical knowledge, and develop an overall understanding of university counseling services.
Our philosophy of training stems from traditional psychology and counseling models of training. Trainees develop and integrate clinical, professional, multicultural, and ethical awareness, knowledge, and skills learned over the course of the practicum and internship year.
Trainees will build upon previous theoretical knowledge and grow as they have the opportunity to integrate new clinical experiences and supervisory and educational material. Our staff includes licensed clinical psychologists and licensed professional counselors, who also provide and model important interpersonal, clinical, multicultural, ethical and professional skills for trainees that help them learn about university counseling services as well as general professional development.
The doctoral practicum training program is an advanced practicum for graduate students in their second or third years of clinical or counseling psychology doctoral programs. The program further develops the basic skills of psychotherapy within the context of our university community and prepares trainees for future work in clinical or counseling psychology.
The program integrates theory, practice and self-understanding in ways that are conducive to the overall professional growth of the trainee. The program uses taped, individual clinical supervision, didactic material and case-based material to move trainees from knowledge to application, planning treatment intervention, and advance awareness of self, clinical, multicultural and ethical issues.
While practicum trainees are typically in the early and formative stages of professional identity development, it is also best if they have had 1–2 years of general clinical experience prior to this practicum. We aim to provide both a safe and challenging learning experience. Therefore, cases are assigned that are not only commensurate with the level of training and experience of the trainee, but that will also appropriately stretch your emerging capabilities.
The program spans one full academic year (fall and spring semesters). Trainees are typically on site 16–20 hours per week and receive two hours of individual supervision per week, as per their graduate program requirements.
This program further develops the basic skills of psychotherapy in an advanced internship for graduate students who have completed initial training in professional counseling (i.e., master’s degree), and are either pursuing further graduate work or are ready to begin accruing post-graduate counseling experience for a licensed professional counseling credential.

Trainees may vary greatly in terms of their professional identity based on program (counselor education, professional counseling), years of prior clinical experience, or their own professional aspiration.
