Transfer Orientation
Changing Tides is an orientation program designed to help new transfer students connect with other students, learn more about academic and campus life, and explore campus resources. The program is required for all new transfer students and will be held on Thursday, August 20 - Friday, August 21, 2026. Students living on campus will be able to move into their residence hall on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Incoming transfer students also have the optional opportunity to attend Setting Sail session 4, held on Wednesday, June 24 - Thursday, June 25, 2026 in addition to Changing Tides. This two-part orientation program is designed for students interested in a deeper introduction to Christopher Newport University. Students will take part in a transfer-specific track incorporated with our traditional New Student Orientation. Through this experience, students will have additional opportunities to connect with peers, learn about campus resources, experience life in the residence halls, and prepare for a smooth transition to the CNU community. Students will come to campus for a day-and-a-half long program in June, where they will stay overnight in the residence hall. While Setting Sail is optional, Changing Tides is required for all incoming transfer students.
New transfer students should create a profile on the Admitted Student System to register for Setting Sail and/or Changing Tides and access information pertaining to your transition to CNU.
Frequently Asked Questions
Registration and payment for Changing Tides will be completed through the Admitted Student System. There is a $75 registration fee for students. The fee covers the costs of provided meals, the Orientation Guidebook and program materials. Yes. However, there are limited spaces available in the residence halls and housing is not guaranteed. If you are interested in living on campus, please contact University Housing at (757) 594-7754. You will work with them directly to sign your housing contract.
Residential students should plan to move in the day before their Changing Tides orientation session. Housing and Residence Life staff will send you more information about the move-in process.
