Testing Center - Christopher Newport University

Accessibility and Care Team Support

Testing Center

Christopher Newport University’s Testing Center is utilized by students who have approved testing accommodations through the office of Accessibility Care Team Support.

Our testing center is located on the third floor of the David Student Union, Suite 393. The center provides adjustable height desks, a distraction-reduced environment and assistive technology as needed. The testing center is open between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

When an instructor is able to provide approved testing accommodations, then the student and faculty should work together on any related exam logistics. When approved accommodations cannot be met by faculty, students with testing accommodations have access to the testing center.

Testing Accommodations

We are able to provide the following approved accommodations in the testing center:

  • Time-and-a-half extended testing
  • Double-time extended testing
  • Reduced-distraction testing
  • Audio/read-aloud testing
  • Dictation testing
  • Computer-response testing
  • Large-print testing
  • Service Animal-accompanied testing

Scheduling Tests

Students will receive scheduling information with their approved accommodations letters. This packet will include all details on scheduling timeframes and appointment request processes.

Note: We have limited space and availability. Testing appointments are valuable and must be scheduled in conjunction with the corresponding faculty. Testers should contact their instructor and the testing center immediately when an illness or emergency requires a rescheduled appointment.

Testing Security

The Christopher Newport University Honor Code applies to all testing in the testing center. Testing is closely monitored by an in-person proctor. Any concerns about testing-related activities will be reported to the respective faculty and/or office.

Taking a Test

  • Testers must provide their CNU ID when checking in for a testing appointment.
  • Students should arrive at least five minutes prior to testing time. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, then the student may not be able to test during their appointment time in order to receive their full testing time; faculty will be contacted for all no-show appointments. Rescheduling is permitted at the discretion of the respective instructor.
  • All personal belongings and non-testing related technology must be stored in cubbies. This provision pertains to all cell phones, headphones (unless accommodation-approved), smart watches, and any other technology.
  • Staff will not answer content-related questions during testing. Should students wish to ask for clarification related to test items, the proctor will reach out to the instructor for assistance.
  • At the conclusion of an exam, all materials will be returned to the instructor, per their directions.
  • Students may bring beverages with them while testing, as long as there is no distraction caused by the student.
  • Limited restroom usage is permitted; however, the student must have the approval of the proctor. Also, the student may not access their belongings during this short break, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Materials

We will supply the following testing materials, as indicated by the faculty’s testing directions:

  • Blue Books
  • Scantrons
  • Scratch paper
  • Pencils
  • Calculators (limited inventory)

We offer temporary noise-canceling headphones, as warranted by a student’s approved accommodations. We also have a limited number of testing center laptops to be used as indicated when an exam warrants electronic testing.
