VCCS Advising Supplements

Transfer counselors play a vital role in preparing Virginia community college students for a smooth transition to Christopher Newport. The information below may be helpful as you speak with your students about their plans for future study. Please keep in mind that these sheets are designed to complement your personal advising sessions with students, and the information is subject to change.

The Virginia Community College System (VCCS)/Christopher Newport Equivalent Course Table contains a complete listing of all VCCS courses that transfer to Christopher Newport.

What courses should Virginia community college students take?

We encourage prospective students from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) to review the following program planning sheets* with a transfer counselor at their home institution. The planning sheets are designed to assist community college students in choosing courses that will not only transfer to Christopher Newport, but simultaneously satisfy the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum, while also progressing them toward graduation in their area of academic interest.

Students from the VCCS should pursue a transfer-oriented associate degree to ensure maximum credit transferability. “Transfer-oriented associate degrees” are those VCCS Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), and Associate of Arts & Sciences (AA&S) degrees identified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) as university-parallel transfer degrees.

Specific degree requirements for each major can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog. Please note that these courses and planning sheets are subject to change.

Pre-Medicine and Pre-Health Programs

The Pre-Med and Pre-Health Programs are designed to prepare students for future study in medical and other health professions. Students cannot major in pre-medicine or pre-health; instead they choose an academic major (e.g., biology), and take suggested courses through the pre-health program to successfully prepare them for their future plans.

The Pre-Health Program planning sheets* below should be used in tandem with an academic major planning sheet from the above list.
