English Proficiency
English language proficiency is required for all students whose native language is not English, or whose schooling was not completed in English. Proof of English proficiency is required for both admission and the issuance of immigration documents. International applicants must meet the minimum score requirements in order to be admitted. Test scores must be submitted directly to CNU from the testing agency. Students whose native language is not English may not apply as test-optional candidates.
Christopher Newport accepts the following standardized tests to determine English proficiency for international applicants:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Minimum required score:
- 71 for the internet-based TOEFL
- 197 on the computer-based TOEFL
- 530 on the paper-based TOEFL
- Minimum required score:
- Duolingo English Test (DET)
- Minimum required score: 100
- Global Test of English Communication (GTEC CBT)
- Minimum required score: 1150
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Minimum required score: 6.0
- International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP)
- Minimum required score: 3.7
- Michigan English Test (MET)
- Minimum required score: 53
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
- Minimum required score: 50
- Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE)
- Minimum required score: ISE II Merit Skills
International students also have the option to submit SAT or ACT exam results. There are no minimum SAT or ACT score requirements.
